The article provides a detailed account of the formation and development of the institution of testimony in the criminal proceedings of the Russian Federation, allowing us to trace its evolution from ancient times to the present day. The study includes a comprehensive analysis of the main legal acts, starting with the monuments of Ancient Rus, such as the Russkaya Pravda and judicial statutes, and continuing with the development of Russian law during the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and up to the present day. Special attention is given to the key stages of the formation of the institution of testimony, as well as its role and place in the system of criminal proceedings. A comprehensive concept for the development of the institution of testimony has been proposed, which contributes to a deeper understanding of its current state and prospects for further improvement in the Russian criminal process.
