The article is devoted to the study of a historical document, which represents the first attempt to codify Russian law. Russkaya Pravda (Russian Truth) is of interest to many categories of scientists (philologists, historians, lawyers, etc.). The article discusses three versions of Russkaya Pravda (Russian Truth): Kratkaya Pravda (Short Truth), Prostrannaya Pravda (Long Truth), and Sokrashchennaya Pravda (Abridged Truth). These are not three different versions of the same document, but three attempts to codify Russian law at different time intervals. The analysis of the structure of the versions of Russkaya Pravda (Russian Truth) makes it possible to trace the evolution of the development of the legal consciousness of a social formation. Russkaya Pravda (Russian Truth) is considered as a code and we analyze the versions of Russkaya Pravda (Russian Truth) for the presence of features characteristic of the code. Russkaya Pravda's role in the development of Russian law has also been examined as a result of the research.
