The formation and development of the institution of private land ownership in Russia, starting from the Old Russian state and ending with the reign of Peter I, is a topic quite often considered by researchers of the history of Russian law. At the same time, in thisarea of scientific research there remain many questions that have not received a clear answer, ranging from establishing the time of the emergence of the institution of private property in the Russian state to defining clear and precise criteria for distinguishing the various forms of private ownership of land that existed then. Consideration of the legal norms of the Old Russian state, regulations of individual Russian principalities, legislation of the period of formation of the unified Russian state allows us to conclude that it is necessary to attribute the origin of the institution of private ownership of land to an earlier time than was generally believed., and consideration of those restrictions on the use of land ownership that establish these regulations, allows us to draw a conclusion about the diversity of forms of ownership in the Russian state in the Х-ХVII centuries.
